In the studio with Justin Bieber.

Usher signed Justin Bieber to Def Jam via his label. This little guy is the truth. He plays guitar, piano, and he sings his tail off. Johnta & I wrote a song for him called “Never Let You Go”. I am recalling the mix now so I decided to blog about it. Be on the look out for him and make sure you purchase his new single “One Time” on iTunes or your local retailer.

Thoughts: Have you ever went to sleep single & woke up in a relationship?

DSC_0247

I posted this question on twitter and I would like to talk more in detail about this. Talking to a couple of the homies today and I was saying how back in the day we used to have definitive conversations with the girl we was seeing. Conversations like “Will you go with me?” or “Will you be my girl?” had to be had. But now, a lot of relationships are born out of “casual friendships”. Like it starts by exchanging numbers and conversation, maybe a few dates, then jumping in the bed. This may go on for awhile, through this period feelings are bound to develop. You might be doing your thing & she might be doing her thing but the more time you two spend together after awhile you start really feeling eachother. Then when that happens you start asking yourself “How did I get here?” and most people start to fight it. You still try to live your single life but if you are spending every other night together, eventually you WILL wake up one day in a relationship. LOL. Totally unspoken, just understood. This is the general concensus amongst the homies today. My question to you is have you ever been in this situation?????

Bryan-Michael Cox | The Soul of Sincerity
By: Dan Kimple

Grammy-award winning songwriter/producer Bryan-Michael Cox works with a dazzling constellation of artists that includes Monica, Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston, Fantasia Barrino, Mary J. Blige, Omarion, Ciara, Amerie, Fergie and Toni Braxton. A seven-time SESAC Songwriter of the Year, a 2009 inductee in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame (where he joins legends like Ray Charles, Johnny Mercer and Otis Redding), Cox is the co-writer of massive hits like Usher’s “Burn.” “Confessions, Pt. 2” and “U Got It Bad”; Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You,” and Mariah Carey’s “Don’t Forget About Us.”

Cox says inspiration arrives when artists talk about their lives. “It’s one thing to come in with a song, but it’s another thing to write something that the artist can relate to. But if they can relate to the song, then their listeners can relate to them.” He notes that his background as a pianist informs his melodic sensibilities. “That’s why I like so many genres of music: I live and die by the melody.”

In Houston, Texas, Cox attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Moving to Georgia, he enrolled as a music major at Clark Atlanta University and landed an unpaid music industry internship. Eventually, he met producer Jermaine Dupri, whom he credits for teaching him the difference between production and songwriting. “JD taught me to let the song breathe. It’s about people singing along.”

Many of Cox’s signature hits have been with female artists. He says that growing up in a household full of women provided a special perspective. “My mom had eight sisters and they all had daughters. I was around them all the time. I heard everybody’s struggles, and trials and tribulations with whatever men they were in love with. I was able to tap into that and to figure things out.”

Cox is currently tracking his debut as an artist. “It’s been in the works for a minute and I’m almost there,” he notes. “Someone asked me a long time ago, ‘Why don’t you make an album?’ I said, ‘Because I don’t have anything to say as an artist.’ All of a sudden, I started writing songs and I have something to say. I’m not signed to a label yet, so I’m taking my time.”

Meanwhile, Cox fans can watch his new online video diary, The Studio Exposed where, on the show’s premiere episode, he reveals that staying in the consciousness of the industry is a prerequisite to his measure of success. “It’s a balance,” he affirms. “I would love to be in the studio all day, but you have to interact, to keep your relationships solid.” Introduced to the organization by his mentor, Greg Curtis, and signed when he was 16 years old, Cox maintains an enduring bond with SESAC. “Coming up as a developing writer, I would have been lost in the sauce at the other organizations,” he says.

For songwriters, Cox observes that channeling creativity into a commercial craft is a key career component. “Write from your heart, but know that you are in direct competition with other songs. You want to be creative and artistic and be true to that, but you want to make money, too. Don’t sell yourself out. Stay true and put it in a commercial package so people can digest it.”

Throwback: Rufus & Chaka Khan “Ain’t Nobody”

I was watching Breakin’ today and I totally forgot that this song was in the movie. Brought back some incredible memories of my Mom and Aunties, old school house parties that were going on downstairs while I was in my room and couldn’t come out but could hear the music playing all night. This song was on the last album they ever made together “Stompin’ at the Savoy”. It was written by David “Hawk” Wolinski who is one of my favorite songwriters from that era. I love this music because this was the beginning of how we make music today. This song like many songs during the early 80′s used The Linn Drum as it’s foundation and it sounds soooo good. And this is a live performance of Chaka performing and she sounds impecable. I mean this is real talent.

Thoughts. Love, Sex, & Religion.

n1563050423_30133884_6383

As we continue to finish Johnta’s debut album “Love, Sex, & Religion”, I have been pondering this subject and how all three words are connected. So let’s take the word “Love”. God is Love. That’s what I believe whole heartedly. And the love between a man and a women is absolutely nessecary. For example the bible says in Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a helper who is suitable for him”. Now before you take that and make assumptions let’s break the verse down. “Helper”: In the book of Genesis the word “helper” is used 20 times. 15 of those 20 times is in reference to God. Because God is our ULTIMATE help! The other 5 times it’s in reference to the woman. So when I think of the word “helper” I say that it means that women are supposed to bring the best out of us and/or help us meet our full potential as men. Most women I know are afraid of that word SUBMIT because it means “to accept or yield to a superior force or the authority or will of another person”. And most men abuse that word but, in Ephesians 5:21 it clearly states that “we (husband & wife) submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Then it outlines our duties to one another. I know I am getting a little deep but this is going to help me with the process of Johnta’s album so follow me a little while longer. So let’s talk about “sex”. Sexuality is the bond that ties us physically to our spouse. Hence the term “becoming one”. So you have to keep that flame burning hot. Once you get into a groove with your spouse, you have to build on that groove. So when Johnta writes & sings lyrics like “My bedroom must be the church, because you keep calling for Jesus!” He is validating the fact that God is definitely involved when you are making love to your spouse. That’s why I sent that birthday sex tweet out last night. I just feel like you and your spouse should have that “birthday sex” all of the time, not just on the holidays, birthdays, or when there’s a full moon! The whole sitting on my face thing might have been a little over the top but it’s true. There should be no bounderies in that department. It only makes your bond stronger. And there’s proof in the pudding, if you talk to a happily married couple who has been married for awhile, a major key to their happiness is the freedom in the bedroom. Trust me. And this blog has been touching on religion as a whole. It all goes hand in hand. God created everything. Love. Sex. Everything. It is ALL a blessing if we use it correctly. The Love Guru has spoken.
